#giveupthecup – the challenge of eliminating the paper cup
Article by Sasa Sestic
Many of us, when we go to our local café we order a single-use takeaway cup and move on with our busy lives.
I know that some café owners try to do right thing by purchasing recyclable/biodegradable take away cups – but what would happen if we did not use them at all?
I understand that it is not be easy to stop serving takeaway or single-use cups overnight, it would requires support from café owners and also more, importantly individuals that are drinking coffee.
There are over 2 700 000 single-use paper cups used in Australia every single day. How good would it be if we didn’t leave this problem for future generations and instead, we decided to deal with it now?
With global warming and bushfires across our country, the team at ONA Coffee and I have decided that it is time to act now. Several weeks ago, we launched a new campaign called #giveupthecup , with the goal being to eliminate single-use cups from our business completely.
We are working on options and alternatives that will be attractive for cafe owners and also customers to happily welcome this initiative. With cup-swap programs which are already in place such as KeepCup, Green Cafeen, Husky and ReturnR we believe that we will succeed in this initiative.
ONA Coffee is using less than 1% of the single-use cups in Australia. However, our goal is larger and extends to the entire coffee community in Australia. If we act together and have other coffee companies making their initiatives to spread this message, we can create real change.
We want to set an example and show that reusable cups can and should be the standard in Australia.
Will you #giveupthecup ?
I would love to hear your thoughts on the use of single-use cups and what we can do as an industry to create change towards more sustainable options. Please feel free to contact me via my Instagram (@sasasestic) and tell me your thoughts!
